Description

The family Ascobolaceae belongs to the order Pezizales, typically comprising coprophilous fungi that thrive on animal dung. In agricultural environments, however, these fungi can manifest as saprotrophic or opportunistic organisms that colonize organic-rich substrates, potentially becoming problematic when they compete with crops for nutrients or create an environment conducive to rot.

The pathogens are characterized by their specialized reproductive structures, known as apothecia, which discharge spores actively into the air. This mechanism allows the fungi to spread rapidly across greenhouse floors and within potting media, especially where aeration is poor and moisture levels remain consistently high.

Plants at the highest risk include greenhouse vegetables, seedlings, and ornamental crops grown in organic-heavy mixtures. While they are not obligate parasites, their presence often indicates unhealthy soil conditions, such as the use of insufficiently composted organic matter, which can favor the development of complex root rot diseases.

Symptoms of infestation often begin with the appearance of small, disc-shaped fruiting bodies on the surface of the growing medium or around the plant stem base. When these colonies proliferate, they can impair gas exchange in the soil and contribute to the necrosis of young tissues, eventually leading to stunted plant growth or wilting.

Effective management requires strict adherence to sanitation protocols. Key measures include the sterilization of substrates, improving drainage to prevent waterlogging, and maintaining proper ventilation to reduce ambient humidity. Avoid the use of raw, uncomposted manure or organic waste in pots to minimize the biological niche available for these fungi to inhabit.
