The fungus does not typically infect living plant tissue but acts as a competitive agent in artificial substrates and greenhouses. Its presence can alter the chemical composition of the growing medium, potentially impeding the development of target crops or fungi by competing for nitrogen and essential micronutrients.
Symptoms of infestation are primarily visual. The fungus produces small, fleshy, disc-shaped apothecia (fruiting bodies) ranging in color from pale yellow to olive-green. The term "crenulated" refers to the distinct, notched, or scalloped appearance of the margins of these fruiting bodies, which become more pronounced as the spores mature.
