It is essential to understand that this organism is not a plant pathogen and does not infect agricultural crops. It belongs to the coprophilous group of fungi, which means its biological cycle is strictly adapted to developing on the dung of herbivores.
The fungus acts as an effective decomposer in the environment. Its spores have evolved to survive the digestive tract of animals, allowing them to germinate rapidly once deposited with manure. By breaking down complex organic matter, it plays a vital role in the nitrogen and carbon cycles within agricultural settings.
The signs of its presence include the appearance of small, apothecia-type fruiting bodies on the surface of manure. These structures are typically saucer-shaped and evolve from a yellowish color to a deep brownish-purple as they mature, reflecting the development of spores, which are often visible as tiny dark dots on the surface.
Developmental conditions for this fungus require high humidity and an abundant supply of nutrient-rich waste. It spreads quickly when conditions are damp, colonizing the substrate effectively. It is a common inhabitant of pasture environments and manure storage facilities where biological decomposition processes are active.
There is no economic damage caused by this fungus to crops, as it does not possess the mechanisms to infect plant tissues. Instead, its activity contributes to the maturation of organic fertilizers. Preventive measures are generally unnecessary; however, if a reduction in fungal activity is desired, standard composting techniques that increase internal pile heat are highly effective.
