Description

Ascocalyx disease, commonly known as Scleroderris canker, is a destructive fungal infection affecting various conifer species. The primary causal agent is the fungus Ascocalyx abietina (syn. Gremmeniella abietina). This pathogen acts as a serious threat to forestry and urban ornamental plantings by targeting buds, shoots, and branches.

The disease primarily impacts various pine species, although it can also affect spruce and fir. Young trees are particularly susceptible to infection, making nurseries and young forest stands the most vulnerable locations. Once established, the fungus can progress to the main stem, eventually leading to tree mortality if left unchecked.

Symptoms often manifest as the browning and eventual shedding of needles. In addition, the formation of cankers (lesions) on the bark of shoots is common, which often leads to resin flow. Upon closer inspection of affected branches, one may notice discoloration of the wood, which is a hallmark sign of the pathogen's activity within the vascular tissues.

The spread of the disease is heavily dictated by environmental factors. High humidity and cool, damp weather conditions are optimal for the production and dissemination of spores. These spores are spread throughout the canopy via rain splash and wind, allowing the fungus to colonize new host tissues, especially during the spring growth flush.

Management strategies focus on rigorous sanitation and prevention. This involves removing and burning infected branches or entire trees to reduce the inoculum load. In specialized nurseries, the strategic application of fungicides may be employed to protect young seedlings. Furthermore, selecting site-adapted and disease-resistant genotypes is essential for long-term control.
