Ascochyta blight, caused by the fungus Ascochyta abelmoschi, is a destructive plant disease primarily affecting okra crops. This fungal pathogen targets the foliage, causing necrotic spots that impair the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively. As a facultative parasite, the fungus can persist in crop debris, making it a recurring challenge for growers.
The primary host for this pathogen is okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). The disease is most prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions where okra is widely cultivated. Under favorable conditions, the infection can spread rapidly across a field, particularly affecting related plant species within the Malvaceae family if they are grown in close proximity.
Symptoms initially appear as small, circular, or irregular brown lesions on the leaves. As the lesion matures, the center often turns greyish or tan, typically surrounded by a darker margin. A diagnostic feature of this blight is the presence of pycnidia—tiny, black, pimple-like structures scattered throughout the necrotic tissue that contain fungal spores.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Ascochyta abelmoschi. Wind currents and splashing water from rain or overhead irrigation are the main vehicles for the secondary spread of the disease within the crop canopy.
