Description

The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Ascochyta cycadina, which primarily affects cycad species. This fungal pathogen is responsible for causing distinct necrotic leaf spot lesions. As a member of the Ascomycota phylum, it utilizes pycnidia to produce spores that allow the disease to spread rapidly within enclosed environments such as greenhouses or conservatories.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are members of the Cycadales order, with the Sago palm (Cycas revoluta) being the most commonly affected. While healthy plants can sometimes resist minor infections, those that are weakened due to improper light, poor soil drainage, or nutritional deficiencies are significantly more susceptible to severe colonization by the fungus.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as small, irregularly shaped spots on the leaflets. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often turning tan or dark brown in color, frequently surrounded by a distinct halo. In advanced stages, small, black, pinhead-sized pycnidia emerge within the center of the necrotic lesions, which serve as the primary source of secondary inoculum.

The development of Ascochyta cycadina is heavily dependent on specific environmental conditions. High humidity levels, stagnant air, and direct overhead irrigation are the primary drivers of disease spread. The spores are easily dispersed by splashing water, which moves the pathogen from infected leaves to healthy ones, particularly during the warmer months when the pathogen's growth cycle is most active.

Effective management and prevention of the disease require a multi-faceted approach to plant health:

  • Strict sanitation practices, including the removal and disposal of all infected foliage.
  • Improving environmental conditions by increasing air circulation and lowering relative humidity.
  • Applying fungicides, specifically copper-based products or systemic fungicides that target ascomycetes.
  • Modifying irrigation techniques to keep the foliage dry, ensuring water is applied only to the root zone.
