The fungus Ascochyta cynarae is the causal agent of the disease known as Ascochyta blight. As a necrotrophic pathogen, it colonizes the tissues of host plants, causing cell death and structural damage. The fungus produces pycnidia, which are essential for its life cycle and the dispersal of conidia in the environment.
The primary host for this pathogen is the artichoke (Cynara cardunculus). Under favorable conditions, the infection can spread rapidly, affecting the foliage, petioles, and sometimes the bracts of the artichoke flower head. This leads to both a reduction in plant vigor and a significant loss of market value for the harvest.
Symptoms typically begin as small, circular, or irregular brown lesions on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots often develop a dark margin and a necrotic center. The formation of visible dark pycnidia in the center of the lesions is a diagnostic feature used to identify the presence of the pathogen.
Environmental factors play a crucial role in the development and spread of Ascochyta cynarae. High relative humidity, persistent rain, and mild temperatures provide the perfect conditions for spore germination and infection. The pathogen can overwinter in crop debris, ensuring its survival for the next growing season if fields are not properly managed.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Essential strategies include the removal and destruction of infected plant material to reduce primary inoculum, the implementation of crop rotation cycles, and the use of resistant cultivars when available. Protective fungicide applications are recommended during periods of high disease pressure to maintain crop health and yield quality.
