Description
The disease is caused by the fungal pathogen Ascochyta syringae. It belongs to the Coelomycetes group and acts as a localized parasite that specifically targets the foliar tissues of woody shrubs, leading to significant physiological stress for the host plant.
The primary host for this pathogen is the common lilac (Syringa vulgaris) and its cultivars. The infection typically starts on mature leaves during the middle of the growing season. While primarily a leaf disease, severe infections can occasionally affect petioles and young shoots under high humidity conditions.
Symptoms initially appear as small, tan or brownish spots with a darker margin. As the fungus matures, it produces fruiting bodies known as pycnidia, which manifest as minute black specks visible within the necrotic lesions. These structures are the source of conidia, which spread the infection to adjacent leaves.
Development is highly favored by rainy weather and high humidity. Optimal conditions for Ascochyta syringae to thrive are temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C. Poor air circulation within dense, unpruned shrub canopies creates a microclimate that drastically accelerates the cycle of reinfection throughout the summer.
The impact of this disease includes premature leaf drop and weakened plant vigor. Managing the infection requires a holistic approach: removing fallen debris in autumn to reduce the inoculum, thinning out branches to improve air circulation, and applying protective fungicides during the early growth stages if the disease history is present.
