The host range of this fungus typically includes hardwood species such as beech, birch, aspen, and alder. It colonizes logs, stumps, and occasionally living trees that have sustained significant mechanical damage, such as frost cracks or broken branches that expose the internal wood to environmental moisture.

The primary symptom of infection is the emergence of distinctive, gelatinous, purple to violet-colored apothecia. These cup-shaped structures grow in clusters on the bark or wood surface. Internally, the wood becomes discolored and soft, undergoing a form of decay that compromises the structural integrity of the affected plant tissue.

Development and dispersal of the fungus are highly dependent on high moisture levels and cool, humid environments. The spores are primarily air-borne, facilitating spread during wet seasons, particularly in areas with poor airflow and high density of woody debris, which serves as a reservoir for the fungal population.

Effective management and prevention strategies focus on reducing the available substrate and enhancing the tree's defensive barriers:

  • removal of decaying logs and diseased stumps to eliminate inoculum sources;
  • proper maintenance of pruning wounds using appropriate tree wound dressings;
