Ascocoryne sarcoides, commonly referred to as the jelly drops fungus, is a distinctive ascomycete fungus that colonizes decaying hardwood. While it is primarily saprobic, it can colonize weakened or stressed trees, acting as a colonizer of dead wood and contributing to the breakdown of structural tissues in forest and garden ecosystems.
The fungus typically attacks broad-leaved trees such as beech, birch, and oak, as well as various fruit-bearing species. It enters the host plant through wounds, pruning cuts, broken branches, or areas where the bark has been damaged by pests or environmental stressors, allowing the mycelium to establish itself within the woody matrix.
The most prominent sign of infestation is the appearance of vibrant, pinkish-purple or magenta gelatinous fruit bodies. These structures, which look like small, jelly-like cushions or discs, eventually coalesce into larger, convoluted masses on the bark or wood surface. Internally, the affected wood exhibits signs of decay, becoming brittle and discolored.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of Ascocoryne sarcoides include high humidity, moderate temperatures, and lack of aeration. The fungus is most aggressive during wet seasons, such as autumn, when moisture allows for the rapid development of its fruiting bodies and the subsequent dispersal of spores to neighboring susceptible hosts.
The damage caused by this fungus is associated with the accelerated degradation of wood, which can compromise the structural integrity of a tree. Preventive measures include maintaining proper tree vigor, performing clean pruning cuts, applying wound sealants, and ensuring adequate air circulation around the canopy to minimize the moisture levels required for fungal proliferation.
