The Ascodesmidaceae family belongs to the Pezizales order, consisting primarily of fungi that act as saprotrophs on soil or decaying organic matter. While these organisms are not always primary plant pathogens, their presence in agricultural systems, particularly in intensive greenhouse cultivation, can pose challenges to plant vitality, often appearing in substrates with high organic content.

As facultative pathogens, these fungi thrive in environments characterized by excessive moisture and uncomposted organic fertilizers. The primary mechanism of damage is the alteration of the soil microenvironment, which can negatively affect root development. The disease type is often categorized as a soil-borne secondary mycosis, which primarily impacts plants already suffering from environmental stress or poor soil aeration.

Susceptible crops include various greenhouse vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, as well as ornamentals raised in controlled conditions. In field production, outbreaks are less frequent but may occur in areas with poor drainage and high organic fertilization levels, creating an environment where these fungi can compete with the crop’s root system for nutrients.

Symptoms typically manifest as the development of small, cup-like fruiting bodies (apothecia) on the substrate surface. Affected plants may show signs of stunting, chlorosis of the lower foliage, and in severe cases, partial root necrosis. The growth of fungal mycelia around the base of the plant can also create a physical barrier that hampers proper water absorption.

Control and prevention strategies are essential for maintaining a healthy growing environment:

  • thorough sterilization of growing media and greenhouse structures;
  • use of fully composted organic amendments to prevent fungal outbreaks;
  • optimization of soil drainage to reduce excess humidity;
  • application of beneficial microbial inoculants to suppress pathogen growth.
Regular monitoring and adherence to sanitary standards in crop production remain the most effective methods for managing potential risks associated with this family.
