Ascoporia is a fungal plant disease caused by pathogens of the Ascoporia genus. It belongs to the ascomycetes group and is known for its ability to compromise the structural integrity of various woody plants and crops. The disease primarily affects the bark and deeper vascular tissues, causing systemic damage that weakens the host plant over time and inhibits its natural defense mechanisms.

The host range for Ascoporia includes a variety of fruit-bearing trees, shrubs, and certain woody forest species. The disease is particularly destructive in nurseries and intensive orchards where plant density is high. Plants suffering from environmental stress, such as drought, nutrient deficiency, or physical damage from frost, are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization by the fungal mycelium.

Diagnostic symptoms typically manifest as localized necrotic lesions on the bark, which can develop into elongated cankers or deep cracks. As the disease progresses, the internal wood tissue often displays significant discoloration, indicating mycelial invasion. In later stages, one can observe the formation of small, dark, fruiting bodies on the surface of the affected bark, which serve as the primary sources for spore dissemination.

The development and spread of Ascoporia are highly dependent on climatic conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain splash and wind are the main vectors for moving spores from infected tissues to healthy host plants. Because the fungus thrives in moist environments, areas experiencing frequent rainfall or poor air circulation within the canopy are at the highest risk of experiencing severe outbreaks.

The damage caused by this disease is significant, often resulting in premature leaf drop, reduced fruit production, and eventually the death of entire branches or the whole plant. Integrated pest management is essential for control, focusing on the removal of infected plant parts, improvement of cultural practices to boost plant vigor, and the judicious application of fungicides during the periods of highest infection risk.
