The characteristic symptom of the disease is the development of brick-red lesions on the bark surface. As the infection progresses, the underlying wood tissue begins to soften and decay. Over time, these areas may develop deep fissures or open sores, often accompanied by exudates that indicate the active metabolism of the fungal mycelium colonizing the host tissues.
The infection cycle is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungal spores are typically disseminated by wind or rain splash, landing on wounds or natural cracks in the bark.
