Description
Chalkbrood is a widespread fungal disease affecting honey bee larvae, caused by the pathogen Ascosphaera apis. While often classified under general agricultural pathology, this disease specifically targets the larval stage of bees, which are essential pollinators for various agricultural crops.
The disease is characterized as a mycosis. Infection occurs when larvae ingest spores of the fungus along with their food. The fungal mycelium eventually invades the entire body of the larva, leading to dehydration and hardening. The result is a mummified, chalk-like larva, hence the name "chalkbrood."
Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and chilling. When a colony is subjected to cold, damp conditions, or poor ventilation within the hive, the bees struggle to maintain the optimal brood nest temperature, allowing the fungus to flourish.
The impact of chalkbrood on beekeeping is significant. Infected colonies show stunted population growth and reduced vigor. This directly correlates to lower honey yields and, more importantly, a decrease in the efficiency of pollination services, which can reduce the yields of fruits and vegetables that rely on honey bee activity.
Prevention is the primary method of control. Effective strategies include keeping strong, healthy colonies with young queens, ensuring optimal hive hygiene, and improving hive ventilation to reduce moisture accumulation. If the infection persists, removing infected frames and sterilizing equipment are necessary steps to minimize the spread of spores.
