Description
Pathogen and disease type: Asperisporium leaf spot is caused by the fungus Asperisporium pongamiae, a pathogen belonging to the group of deuteromycetes. It is characterized as a foliar disease that primarily infects the leaves of its host, leading to reduced photosynthetic efficiency and premature senescence of the canopy.
Host plants: The fungus primarily infects Pongamia pinnata (also known as Karanja tree). This plant is increasingly important for sustainable oil production and agroforestry, making the study of its pathogens critical for ensuring the stability and yield of these plantations.
Symptoms and signs: The infection manifests as necrotic spots on the leaf surface. Initially, these spots are small and chlorotic, but they quickly expand and develop a distinctive olivaceous-black, velvety mass of conidia on the abaxial leaf surface. As the infection progresses, leaves turn yellow and eventually abscise prematurely, stunting the growth of the tree.
Development and spread: The fungus thrives under conditions of high humidity and warm temperatures. Spores are disseminated by wind and splashing water from rain. Dense planting and poor orchard management provide ideal microclimates for the pathogen to establish and spread rapidly throughout the plantation.
