Description
Clarification: Aspicilia calcarea is not a plant pathogen and does not cause diseases in agricultural crops. It is a crustose lichen species belonging to the Megalosporaceae family. In agronomic terms, it is recognized as a biodeterioration agent that colonizes mineral substrates, such as limestone walls or field infrastructure, rather than living plants.
The organism consists of a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and algae. As a lithophilic organism, it grows on rocky surfaces. Because it lacks the parasitic mechanisms required to infect plant cells or tissues, it poses no biological risk to the productivity or health of crops in fields, greenhouses, or orchards.
The visual symptoms of its presence include the formation of a crustose, greyish or white thallus that adheres tightly to stone surfaces. The thallus is often areolated, meaning it appears as a network of small, angular segments separated by cracks. This appearance is a diagnostic feature of this species on calcareous rocks.
The development of Aspicilia calcarea is driven by environmental conditions rather than agricultural practices. It requires a specific mineral substrate, primarily limestone, to thrive. High humidity and direct light are essential for its growth. It does not spread to plants because it is physiologically incapable of absorbing nutrients from plant vascular systems.
While not a disease-causing agent for crops, its presence can be a nuisance for structural maintenance on farms. By producing lichen acids, it can slowly weather stone, concrete, or mortar structures over time. Preventive measures for managing its growth on infrastructure include:
- Power washing of affected structural surfaces.
- Application of specialized biocidal solutions to prevent re-growth.
- Improving site drainage to reduce surface moisture.
- Maintaining dry surfaces to inhibit lichen development.
