The disease is caused by members of the order Asterinales. These fungi produce small, dark perithecia (fruiting bodies) that are often visible to the naked eye as black spots or crusts on the upper or lower leaf surfaces. This parasitic activity can weaken the host plant, leading to premature senescence of the affected leaves.
Various broad-leaved trees and shrubs serve as hosts for this pathogen. The symptoms typically begin as small discoloration spots that gradually darken and enlarge. In severe cases, the infected leaves may become brittle, wither, and drop prematurely, which can stunt the overall growth of the plant if the infestation is persistent over multiple seasons.
