This pathogen is known for causing leaf spot diseases in specific plant hosts, where it develops dark, superficial mycelium on the leaf surfaces, forming a structure commonly referred to as a "sooty" or black spot infection.
The host range of Asterina centropogonis is primarily centered on members of the Campanulaceae family, particularly the genus Centropogon. These plants, often found in neotropical environments, provide the necessary substrate for the fungus to complete its reproductive cycle, leading to chronic infections if left unmanaged.
Symptoms appear as distinct, dark, sometimes circular spots on the leaf surface, which correspond to the location of the fungus's thyriothecia (fruiting bodies).
