Asteromella leaf spot of Dracaena

The causative agent of the disease is the parasitic fungus Asteromella dracaenae, which belongs to the fungi imperfecti. This condition manifests as a specific leaf spotting that primarily affects the foliage of ornamental plants from the Asparagaceae family, particularly various species of Dracaena.

The main crops susceptible to infection include indoor Dracaena varieties, such as Dracaena marginata, Dracaena deremensis, and other species popular in interior landscaping. The disease most often affects weakened plants that are under stress or receiving improper maintenance.

The key symptom of pathogen development is the appearance of small brown or yellowish spots on the leaves, which enlarge over time. In the center of these spots, one can often observe dark dots known as pycnidia, where the fungus produces its spores for further dissemination of the infection.

Favorable conditions for fungal growth include high air humidity combined with stagnant water, lack of proper ventilation, and excessive watering. Spores spread through water droplets during misting, contaminated gardening tools, or physical contact between healthy leaves and infected plant parts.

The harmfulness of the disease lies in the premature drying of foliage, loss of the plant's aesthetic appeal, and general exhaustion. Without appropriate intervention, the fungal infection can lead to complete loss of decorative value and even the death of the Dracaena, making early diagnosis and integrated protection measures essential.
