Astraeus (lat. Astraeus) is a genus of fungi that, under specific agronomic conditions, acts as a plant pathogen causing significant physiological stress. While typically recognized as a soil saprotroph, in conditions of poor ventilation and excessive moisture, the fungus can behave as an opportunistic pathogen infecting roots and plant stems.
The disease is classified as a fungal root rot, where the pathogen colonizes the root system, damaging the vascular tissue. This leads to the disruption of water and nutrient transport, ultimately causing the plant to wither. The fungus thrives in moist environments, utilizing damaged roots as an entry point for further colonization.
A wide range of horticultural crops and ornamental plants are susceptible to this infection, especially during the early stages of growth. Seedlings and young plants are particularly at risk, as their underdeveloped immune systems and root structures struggle to resist the invasion of the fungal mycelium.
