Astraeus hygrometricus, commonly known as the barometer earthstar, is a saprotrophic fungus that frequently appears in soils rich in organic matter. Unlike true plant pathogens, this organism does not attack living plant tissues but thrives on decaying wood and plant debris, making it a common inhabitant of forest edges and unkempt agricultural borders.

As a saprotroph, the fungus is responsible for the breakdown of organic material. While it is not a direct threat to crop health, its presence is a biological indicator. A high density of A. hygrometricus often suggests that organic mulches are not decomposing properly or that the soil structure is suffering from excessive dampness and lack of proper aeration.

The morphology of the fungus is its most distinct feature. The fruit bodies consist of a star-shaped exterior that is highly sensitive to humidity. In wet conditions, the rays expand to reveal the central spore sac, while in dry weather, they fold inwards to protect the reproductive structure. This hygroscopic movement is what gives the fungus its common name.

Developmental conditions for the barometer earthstar include shaded areas, high soil moisture, and an abundance of lignified plant waste. It is most commonly found in perennial crops, nurseries, or near orchard edges where organic residues are left on the soil surface for long periods without adequate tilling or microbial decomposition aid.

Management of areas where this fungus is prevalent focuses on improving soil aeration and organic management. By reducing the thickness of raw mulch layers and implementing proper crop rotation, growers can create an environment less favorable for the fungus. If the presence is excessive, it is advised to improve drainage and incorporate organic materials more deeply into the soil profile to speed up natural breakdown processes.
