Atelocauda is a genus of rust fungi (order Uredinales) known for causing specific fungal infections in various plant species. As a plant pathogen, it primarily affects the foliage and succulent stems of its hosts, causing physiological disruption that hinders normal photosynthesis and metabolic activity.

The disease is caused by the fungus Atelocauda digitata, which functions as an obligate parasite. It is categorized as a rust disease due to the characteristic pustules that erupt through the epidermis of the plant tissue, releasing spores into the environment to initiate new infection cycles in healthy parts of the plant or neighboring hosts.

Host plants primarily include various species within the Fabaceae family, most notably those of the genus Acacia. The infection often manifests as irregular brown to dark-colored lesions or pustules on the undersides of leaves. Over time, these spots can enlarge and coalesce, eventually leading to chlorosis, tissue necrosis, and in severe cases, premature leaf drop.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Atelocauda. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures create an ideal environment for spore germination and colonization. The pathogen is highly efficient at dispersing via wind currents, making management challenging in dense environments where humidity is trapped between the canopy layers.

Effective control involves a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural practices such as thinning out dense canopies to improve airflow and immediate removal of infected plant debris are essential for reducing inoculum pressure. If the infection is widespread, the application of targeted fungicides during the active growth period is necessary to mitigate damage and protect the long-term health of the plantation.
