Athelia blight is a destructive plant disease caused by fungi of the genus Athelia, most notably Athelia rolfsii (often referred to as Southern blight). This soil-borne pathogen is known for its aggressive nature and its ability to infect a broad array of botanical hosts worldwide, causing significant economic losses in agricultural production.
The host range of Athelia is exceptionally wide, encompassing more than 500 species of plants. It frequently affects essential crops such as tomatoes, peppers, legumes, cucurbits, and various ornamental plants. It thrives in both greenhouse environments and open-field cultivation, making it a persistent challenge for commercial growers.
Diagnostic symptoms typically manifest as the sudden wilting of foliage, often preceded by the appearance of dense, white, thread-like mycelium spreading across the soil surface and the base of the plant stem. As the disease progresses, the stem tissue undergoes rapid decay, and the fungus produces numerous sclerotia that look like mustard seeds, which serve as the primary long-term survival structures.
The development and spread of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental factors. High soil temperatures (optimal range of 25–30 °C) and high moisture levels are critical for the activation of dormant sclerotia. The pathogen is easily disseminated through contaminated irrigation water, infested soil movement, and the transport of infected plant material or tools.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize soil inoculum levels. This includes crop rotation with resistant varieties, ensuring proper soil drainage to prevent waterlogging, and the timely removal of infected plants. Chemical control may involve the application of fungicides, while biological control using antagonistic organisms like Trichoderma species has shown promise in suppressing the pathogen's growth in the rhizosphere.
