Description

The Atheliaceae family represents a group of fungi that includes significant soil-borne plant pathogens. While many species within this family are beneficial decomposers, certain members act as aggressive parasites, causing severe diseases such as root rot, stem rot, and blight in various horticultural and agricultural crops worldwide.

The most economically damaging species is Athelia rolfsii. This fungus is a devastating pathogen capable of attacking a vast host range, including tomatoes, beans, peanuts, and various ornamental plants. It thrives particularly well in warm, humid climates, making it a critical threat to greenhouse operations and field crops in temperate to tropical zones.

Initial infection often appears as a white, fan-like mycelial growth spreading over the soil surface and the lower stem of the host plant. This is followed by tissue decay, chlorosis, and rapid wilting. The diagnostic stage is the development of spherical sclerotia, which resemble mustard seeds, changing color from white to tan or dark brown as they mature.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of disease outbreaks. The pathogen requires temperatures between 25°C and 35°C and high soil moisture to proliferate. The sclerotia are highly resilient structures that allow the fungus to persist in the soil for several years, even in the absence of a host crop, making long-term management challenging.

Integrated pest management is essential for controlling Atheliaceae.

  • Implement deep plowing to bury infected plant debris.
  • Use resistant cultivars whenever possible.
  • Apply biological control agents like Trichoderma species to suppress pathogen growth.
  • Ensure proper field drainage and irrigation scheduling to minimize surface humidity.
Preventive measures focused on soil health are the most sustainable approach to mitigating the impact of these destructive pathogens.
