Atractogloea is a genus of fungi belonging to the basidiomycetes, recognized for its pathogenic impact on various woody plants. Unlike many common pathogens, this genus thrives by colonizing the bark and cambial tissues, disrupting the vital transport systems of the host plant and significantly weakening its overall structural integrity.
The primary hosts for Atractogloea are various deciduous tree species, especially those growing in dense, humid environments. The pathogen typically gains entry through bark fissures, pruning wounds, or necrotic lesions caused by environmental stress, allowing the fungus to establish a foothold within the living tissues of the tree.
Symptoms of an infection often include the development of gelatinous, slimy patches on the outer bark, which may darken or harden over time. As the fungal colony expands, it causes localized tissue necrosis, inhibiting the tree's ability to heal wounds and leading to progressive dieback of the affected branches or stems.
Development and spread are highly dependent on high moisture levels and mild temperatures, which trigger spore production. The dissemination of these spores is primarily facilitated by wind, rainfall splash, and sometimes by insect vectors, which move the inoculum between healthy and infected host trees during the active growing season.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural practices and targeted sanitation. Key strategies include the removal of infected wood, improvement of air circulation within the canopy through selective thinning, and the application of fungicides on pruning cuts to prevent colonization. Monitoring forest health and maintaining tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and site management remain the best methods for long-term prevention.
