Aulacostroma is a genus of ascomycetous fungi that acts as a plant pathogen, primarily manifesting as various forms of leaf spots and tissue necrosis. These fungi are characterized by their ability to form dark, crust-like or dot-like fruiting bodies (ascomata) directly on the surface of the host plant's tissues, disrupting its normal physiological functions.
The host range for this pathogen includes various tree and shrub species, often affecting those with compromised health or those situated in high-humidity microclimates. While Aulacostroma is frequently associated with ornamental horticulture, its presence can be detrimental to the vigor and aesthetic value of affected botanical specimens in forest nurseries and landscape designs.
The symptoms of Aulacostroma infection typically begin with the appearance of discolored spots on the foliage. As the fungus matures, these spots become more defined, often developing small, raised black fruiting bodies in the center of the necrotic area. Severe infestations can lead to widespread chlorosis, premature defoliation, and significant branch dieback.
Environmental factors are critical for the development and spread of the disease. Warm and moist weather conditions, such as prolonged periods of rainfall or excessive overhead irrigation, facilitate the release and germination of fungal spores. Poor ventilation and overcrowding of plants further exacerbate the problem by creating a stable environment for the pathogen to thrive.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to plant health. Pruning infected branches and removing fallen leaves during the dormant season is essential to reduce the primary inoculum load. Furthermore, applying systemic and contact fungicides during the early stages of the growing season can prevent the spread of the disease, while maintaining proper plant spacing ensures better air circulation.
