The order Aulographales comprises a group of fungi belonging to the class Dothideomycetes. These pathogens are highly specialized parasites that primarily affect the leaves and stems of woody plants. Unlike many other foliar pathogens, these fungi exhibit narrow host specificity, forming distinct microscopic structures directly on the surface of the plant tissues.
The disease is caused by ascomycetes that develop specialized fruiting bodies known as thyriothecia. These structures are characteristically flat and often star-shaped or elongated, which serves as a key diagnostic feature for identifying the pathogen. The fungus penetrates the plant epidermis, leading to localized tissue necrosis and interfering with essential photosynthetic processes.
Common host plants susceptible to Aulographales infection include various coniferous and some deciduous tree species, particularly those within the Pinus and Quercus genera. The infection typically manifests on the needles or the underside of leaves, appearing as dark, well-defined spots that may coalesce as the disease progresses throughout the growing season.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of these fungi, specifically favoring high humidity and moderate temperatures. Spore dispersal is primarily driven by rain splash and wind, making epidemic outbreaks most likely during extended periods of wet weather. Such conditions facilitate rapid spore germination and the successful colonization of the host plant tissues by the fungal mycelium.
The economic and ecological impact of this disease includes premature needle or leaf drop, which significantly weakens the trees and reduces their annual growth rate. Chronic infestation can predispose the plants to secondary threats, such as bark beetles or stem decay organisms. In horticultural and silvicultural settings, this results in significant aesthetic degradation and a reduction in overall timber quality.
