Description
Aurantiporus is a genus of fungi recognized in plant pathology as a significant causal agent of wood decay. These organisms function as necrotrophic pathogens, colonizing the woody tissue of living trees and decomposing essential structural components such as lignin. As decay progresses, the internal integrity of the host tree is severely compromised, leading to structural instability.
The host range typically includes various broad-leaved trees found in temperate forests and orchards. The fungus initiates infection through wounds, such as those caused by pruning, storms, or physical bark damage. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the heartwood, slowly degrading the tree's internal support system while the exterior may initially appear deceptively healthy.
Visible symptoms include the development of fleshy, often bright orange to reddish fruit bodies (conks) emerging from the trunk or root collar. Internally, the wood undergoes distinct color changes and texture softening, often becoming spongy or crumbly. These physical changes are indicators that the fungal infection has reached an advanced stage and is significantly affecting the tree's health.
Development and spread are primarily driven by environmental conditions that favor fungal growth, such as high ambient humidity and moderate temperatures. Spores are dispersed through the air or by insect vectors, colonizing new hosts whenever exposed wood tissue is accessible. Overcrowded or stressed stands are particularly susceptible to widespread infections due to increased competition and lack of airflow.
Effective management focuses on preventive silvicultural practices and mechanical intervention. This includes maintaining proper tree vigor, performing clean pruning cuts, and protecting exposed wood with approved sealants. In cases of severe infestation, the removal of the entire tree is often necessary to prevent the spread of spores to adjacent healthy trees, alongside the disposal of infected wood matter.
