The biology of Aureoboletus is characterized by the formation of ectomycorrhizae. In this relationship, the fungal hyphae envelop the plant roots, which significantly increases the surface area for the uptake of water and essential mineral nutrients, such as phosphorus. In return, the fungus receives carbohydrates produced by the tree through photosynthesis.
