As a facultative parasite, it predominantly targets damaged wood, playing a significant role in the degradation of lignified tissues and the overall process of white rot development in deciduous stands.

This fungus primarily affects deciduous species, including elder, alder, oak, maple, and various orchard trees. It colonizes the trunks and branches of trees that have experienced environmental stress, such as frost cracks, sunscald, or improper pruning, which provide an entry point for the mycelium to establish itself within the host tissue.

The diagnostic signs of infestation are the distinct, ear-shaped fruiting bodies that emerge from the bark. These bodies have a gelatinous texture when fresh and become firm or horny when dry. Internally, the fungus destroys the structural integrity of the wood, leading to progressive softening and decay that eventually weakens the tree's mechanical stability.

The development of this pathogen is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Spore dispersal is facilitated by wind and rainwater, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly across dense plantings. Favorable conditions for sporulation occur mainly during humid spring and autumn periods, which are critical for the fungus's reproductive cycle.
