The order Auriculariales comprises a group of basidiomycetous fungi known for their wood-decaying capabilities. In agricultural and forestry contexts, these fungi act as opportunistic pathogens that target weakened or injured trees, leading to the gradual degradation of woody tissue and significant structural damage.
The causal agent involves fungal mycelium that colonizes the xylem of the host plant. The disease manifests as white or brown wood rot, causing the plant tissues to become soft, spongy, and brittle. The presence of these fungi is often indicated by gelatinous, ear-shaped fruiting bodies emerging from the bark of infected branches or trunks.
These pathogens predominantly affect deciduous trees, including fruit-bearing species like apple, pear, and plum, as well as various ornamental trees. Infection typically occurs through wounds caused by pruning, storms, frost cracks, or pest damage, providing an entry point for spores to germinate and establish the initial mycelial colony.
Development and spread are favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures. Once established, the fungus releases vast quantities of spores that are easily dispersed by wind and splashing rain. These spores settle on susceptible bark wounds, starting new cycles of infection that can persist for many years if the host is not treated.
The economic damage is significant as it weakens the tree's health and stability, leading to reduced productivity and eventually the death of the specimen. Protective measures include:
- Implementing rigorous sanitation by pruning and destroying infected limbs.
- Sealing all pruning wounds with specialized tree wound dressings.
- Monitoring trees for early signs of fungal fruiting bodies.
- Boosting tree vitality through balanced fertilization and proper irrigation.
