Austropaxillus is a genus of fungi within the Paxillaceae family that can act as a pathogen affecting the root systems of various tree species. In an agronomical and forestry context, while some species participate in symbiotic mycorrhizal associations, others exhibit pathogenic behavior, causing significant degradation of root tissues and affecting the physiological health of the host tree.
The primary hosts for these fungi are various forest and woody plant species. Nursery saplings and young plantations are particularly susceptible to infection, as their root systems are fragile and sensitive to the colonization of fungal pathogens, which often leads to reduced nutrient uptake and stunted growth in the early stages of development.
