Description
Guava rust is a severe fungal disease caused by the pathogen Austropuccinia psidii. This fungus is known for its aggressive colonization of plant tissues, leading to significant economic damage to the nursery industry and natural ecosystems where Myrtaceae species are dominant.
The host range includes a wide variety of plants within the Myrtaceae family, most notably guava (Psidium guajava), eucalyptus, and various ornamental shrubs. The pathogen is highly virulent, meaning that susceptible plants can be completely defoliated or killed under favorable environmental conditions.
Clinical signs of the disease are characterized by the emergence of bright yellow pustules containing spores on fresh, succulent tissues. As the infection progresses, affected leaves curl, become necrotic, and drop prematurely. Young stems often undergo severe distortion, which stunts the overall growth of the plant.
Environmental factors play a critical role in the epidemiology of Austropuccinia psidii. It thrives in high humidity and moderate temperatures, which facilitate the production and dispersal of urediniospores. These spores can travel long distances via wind currents, making containment difficult once an outbreak has occurred.
Management of guava rust relies on rigorous quarantine protocols, cultural practices such as pruning infected branches, and the use of chemical fungicides. Fungicide applications, including protective and systemic agents, are necessary in intensive production settings to suppress the fungal population and prevent new infections.
