Bacidia rubella is a species of crustose lichen belonging to the family Ramalinaceae. In agricultural practice, it is strictly classified as an epiphyte rather than a disease pathogen. It settles on the bark of living deciduous trees, utilizing the surface only as a physical substrate for its life cycle, without invading the vascular system of the host plant.
The host range for this lichen includes various broad-leaved trees such as apple, pear, oak, and linden. It thrives in environments with high humidity and stagnant air. In orchards, it is commonly observed on older, slow-growing trees where the bark has become rough and porous, providing a stable surface for the lichen to anchor itself.
Symptoms of its presence include tiny, brownish or reddish-orange fruiting bodies (apothecia) scattered across the tree bark. Unlike parasitic fungi that cause tissue necrosis or wilting, Bacidia rubella does not cause localized wilting or necrotic spots. Its presence is primarily aesthetic and structural, appearing as a crusty growth on the trunk or large branches.
The economic harm caused by this lichen is indirect but significant in intensive fruit production. Extensive colonization can hinder the normal gas exchange through the lenticels of the bark. Furthermore, a dense layer of lichen creates a micro-habitat that facilitates the overwintering of various agricultural pests, including scale insects and mites, while retaining moisture that promotes fungal disease outbreaks.
Management strategies focus on maintaining tree vigor and improving air circulation within the orchard. Pruning is the most effective preventative measure, as it increases sunlight penetration and reduces humidity around the trunk. Manual cleaning of the bark using soft wire brushes and the application of horticultural lime wash are standard procedures to control the population of lichens on the tree bark.
