Bacidiaceae is a family of fungi forming part of lichens, which are often mistakenly identified as plant diseases due to their epiphytic lifestyle. It is crucial to understand that in most cases, these are not plant parasites; they simply use the bark of trees as a growth substrate. These organisms belong to the class Lecanoromycetes and are characterized by crustose thalli that develop on the trunks and branches of various woody plants.

These lichens consist of ascomycetes living in a symbiotic relationship with algae. In horticultural practice, they are sometimes misclassified as pathogens. However, they are strictly epiphytes. Their appearance on tree bark usually points to high humidity and a decline in tree vigor rather than being a primary infection agent that destroys living plant tissues directly.

Symptoms of their presence include crusty coatings or patches of various colors, ranging from gray to greenish-yellow. Unlike true plant diseases, they do not penetrate deep into the phloem or xylem. However, massive colonization can provide shelter for overwintering pests and maintain excess moisture on the bark surface, which can indirectly stress the tree and lead to bark degradation over time.

Environmental conditions favoring their development include high humidity, poor air circulation within the canopy, and limited sunlight. They thrive in neglected orchards where pruning is insufficient. Additionally, the presence of certain species is often used as a bioindicator of air quality, as many Bacidiaceae members are sensitive to sulfur dioxide and other air pollutants common in urban or industrial areas.

Management and prevention focus on sound cultural practices rather than chemical control. Key measures include:

  • Regular pruning to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration.
  • Whitewashing trunks with lime to sanitize the surface.
  • Mechanical removal of loose or dead bark during the dormant season.
  • Managing orchard density to reduce humidity levels.
Since they are not true parasites, using fungicides is generally unnecessary if proper orchard maintenance is consistently applied.
