Bacterial wilt, caused by Corynebacterium species, is a systemic plant disease that targets the vascular system. The bacteria colonize the xylem vessels, multiplying rapidly and creating biofilms that physically block the upward transport of water, leading to rapid wilting and necrosis of plant tissues.

A wide variety of crops are susceptible to this pathogen, most notably Common hop (Humulus lupulus). When bacterial wilt infects hop gardens, it can cause severe yield losses and reduce the longevity of the perennial hop bines, threatening the overall viability of the plantation.

Diagnostic symptoms include the loss of turgor, yellowing of the leaves, and the progressive wilting of stems. A distinct sign of this infection is the browning of the vascular tissue inside the stems, which can be easily observed by making a cross-section of the plant’s stalk.

The development of the disease is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high soil moisture and warm temperatures. The bacteria spread through contaminated soil, irrigation water, and the movement of tools used during routine cultural practices, making hygiene a critical component of disease management.

Effective control measures focus on preventive strategies, as curative chemical options are often limited. These include sourcing pathogen-free planting stock, maintaining strict field sanitation, and implementing crop rotation strategies. Monitoring the population of insect vectors and ensuring soil health are also vital steps in mitigating the risk of spread.
