They are classified as lichens that utilize tree bark merely as a substrate for attachment and survival.
These organisms are commonly found on woody plants, particularly in orchards with older trees. They prefer surfaces with thick, textured bark that remains damp for long periods, providing the necessary moisture for the growth and structural development of the lichen thallus.
The primary indicators of the presence of Baeomycetales are the visible growths on the bark, which can manifest as crusts, squamules, or small apothecia. Unlike true infectious plant diseases, these organisms do not cause necrosis, rot, or structural damage to the underlying bark or wood of the tree.
The development and spread of these lichens are primarily driven by environmental factors, including high humidity levels, poor air circulation, and low light intensity within the canopy. These conditions are typically prevalent in neglected orchards or dense, poorly pruned plantations where air stagnation occurs.
While Baeomycetales are not parasitic, their dense growth can indirectly impact plant health by providing a refuge for overwintering pests and harboring fungal pathogen spores. Control measures include regular pruning to improve airflow, scrubbing the bark to remove accumulated mosses and lichens, and applying lime wash to prevent re-colonization.
