Rice balansia is a specific fungal disease caused by the ascomycete fungus Balansia oryzae-sativae. This pathogen affects plant tissues, leading to morphological deformations and preventing the proper development of reproductive organs. The disease is primarily observed in tropical and subtropical regions where high humidity and warm temperatures create optimal conditions for fungal proliferation.

The primary host for this pathogen is cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). The fungus can also infect various wild grass species, which serve as natural reservoirs for the pathogen during the off-season. The fungus typically colonizes the host plant at early developmental stages, resulting in a systemic infection that manifests throughout the plant's growth cycle.

Symptoms are characterized by distinctive thickenings and galls on the panicles and stems. Infected parts of the plant are often covered with a whitish or grayish fungal mycelium. Integrated management strategies involve the use of certified, disease-free seed, crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle, and thorough removal of crop residues where the fungus persists. In endemic areas, the cultivation of resistant rice varieties remains the most sustainable approach to minimizing losses.
