Basidiobolosis is a fungal disease affecting plant tissues, primarily caused by fungi belonging to the Basidiobolaceae family. While these organisms are commonly found as soil-borne saprophytes, they possess the ability to infect living plant tissues, particularly when environmental conditions allow them to shift from a decomposer niche to a parasitic strategy.

This pathogen impacts a wide range of horticultural, ornamental, and field crops. Plants growing in humid environments or those with high foliage density are particularly susceptible. The infection primarily targets the roots, root collars, and the lower leaves that remain in close proximity to the soil surface, where moisture levels are typically higher.

Symptoms of basidiobolosis are characterized by the rapid onset of water-soaked lesions that quickly transform into soft rot. As the disease progresses, the infected tissues collapse and may exhibit a fine, white to gray mycelial mat on the surface. If left untreated, the entire plant structure can fail, leading to significant structural damage.

The spread and development of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as poor air circulation and excessive humidity. The fungal spores are easily dispersed via water splashes during irrigation, contaminated equipment, or movement of soil particles. This makes greenhouse and nursery settings high-risk areas for rapid colonization.

To effectively manage and prevent this disease, it is essential to prioritize good agricultural practices. This includes optimizing plant spacing to improve airflow, maintaining strict sanitation in growth facilities, and using sterilized growing media. Regular monitoring for early signs of tissue decay is crucial to prevent the widespread loss of crop yield.
