Description
Basidiobolomycosis is a fungal infection caused by fungi belonging to the order Basidiobolales. While primarily recognized in medical and veterinary contexts as an agent of zygomycosis, in agricultural systems, these fungi behave as opportunistic pathogens capable of causing severe soft tissue rot in various succulent crops and ornamental plants.
The causative agent belongs to the phylum Zygomycota. It acts as a facultative parasite, rapidly colonizing dead or dying organic matter before invading living tissues. This ability allows the pathogen to persist in the soil or crop residues for extended periods, making it a persistent threat in greenhouse environments with high organic content.
Symptoms of the disease initially manifest as water-soaked lesions on the stems or leaves. These lesions quickly expand, leading to the rapid decay of plant tissues, often accompanied by the development of a white, granular fungal mass on the surface. If left untreated, the pathogen progresses to the vascular system, causing systemic collapse and necrosis of the entire plant.
The spread of the infection is heavily dependent on microclimatic conditions, specifically temperatures ranging between 25°C and 35°C and high relative humidity. Poor drainage, overcrowding, and overhead irrigation are primary drivers of outbreaks, as they create the perfect environment for conidial germination and rapid hyphal colonization of susceptible plant parts.
Integrated pest management remains the most effective defense strategy. This includes strict sanitation measures, such as the removal and destruction of infected plant debris, and the implementation of rigorous greenhouse hygiene. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate fungicides, while cultural practices focus on improving airflow and preventing waterlogging to reduce the vulnerability of the crop.
