These fungi, typically known as saprotrophs in soil ecosystems, can act as opportunistic pathogens under certain conditions, causing tissue degradation and necrosis in various plant species. Their biological life cycle involves the production of spores that facilitate rapid dissemination across agricultural fields.
This pathogen primarily targets succulent tissues in vegetables, ornamental plants, and various nursery stock. Infection usually occurs when environmental stressors weaken the plant, making it susceptible to fungal colonization. The pathogen is particularly problematic in systems with high density planting or poor air circulation, which prevents the drying of foliage.
Symptoms of infection start as water-soaked lesions that transition into dark, sunken necrotic spots. As the fungus progresses, it disrupts the vascular system, leading to rapid wilting and collapse of the plant structures. In high-humidity scenarios, one might observe a whitish or brownish fungal mat growing over the affected tissues, indicating active sporulation.
Environmental factors are the primary drivers for the spread of this disease. Temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C, combined with high humidity levels (typically above 80%), provide the necessary conditions for the spores to germinate and invade host tissues. Proper moisture management in greenhouses is essential to suppress the outbreak of the infection.
Management and prevention involve a robust combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Agronomists recommend strictly regulating irrigation to avoid standing water, ensuring consistent airflow through pruning or spacing, and practicing meticulous field sanitation. If chemical intervention is required, contact and systemic fungicides must be applied preventively to protect the plant from further colonization by Basidiobolomycota species.
