Description
Basidiobolomycosis is a fungal disease caused by members of the Basidiobolomycotina group. While these fungi are primarily known for their role in decomposing organic matter, they can behave as opportunistic pathogens under specific environmental conditions. In the context of plant pathology, they primarily target plants in moist, temperate, or tropical environments, causing tissue degradation and necrosis.
This pathogen affects a diverse range of crops, including various vegetables, ornamental flowers, and shrubs. Plants growing in greenhouses are particularly susceptible due to the controlled microclimate that often favors fungal proliferation. Infection typically begins when spores land on wounded surfaces or directly enter through stomata, leading to systemic infection if the plant's natural defenses are compromised.
Key symptoms and signs of infection include water-soaked lesions that rapidly expand and darken. As the disease progresses, the infected tissue becomes soft, pulpy, and often develops a distinct fungal mycelium on the surface. Stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and eventual collapse of the infected plant parts are common indicators that the disease has reached a critical stage.
The development and spread of this disease are heavily dependent on humidity and soil conditions. High humidity levels (often above 85%) combined with warm temperatures (20–28°C) are critical factors that facilitate the germination and spread of spores. Poor soil drainage and overcrowding of plants further exacerbate the risk of a widespread outbreak within a cultivation area.
The economic impact of this disease can be severe, leading to significant yield losses and the disposal of infected plant material. Management strategies should prioritize preventative measures such as maintaining optimal plant spacing, ensuring proper greenhouse ventilation, and minimizing leaf wetness. Fungicidal treatments should be applied at the first sign of infection, strictly following label instructions to prevent the development of resistant fungal populations.
