The phylum Basidiomycota represents a major group of fungal pathogens that inflict severe agricultural damage worldwide. These fungi are responsible for the most devastating diseases, specifically rusts and smuts, which act as obligate parasites, diverting vital nutrients away from the host plant's metabolism.

These pathogens primarily target economically significant crops, including wheat, barley, maize, and various legumes. By colonizing vascular tissues and leaves, they disrupt the plant's physiological development, ultimately leading to significant yield losses and poor-quality grain that is unsuitable for market.

Clinical signs of Basidiomycota infections typically manifest as distinctive uredinia or telia pustules on leaves and stems, often appearing as rusty, yellow, or dark-brown dusty lesions.
