Description
Basidiophora is a genus of oomycetes that causes serious diseases in plants, commonly classified as a form of downy mildew. The most significant species, Basidiophora entospora, is a pathogen that specifically attacks members of the Asteraceae family. This disease is known to disrupt the development of ornamental plants and certain agricultural crops, causing major economic losses in commercial nurseries.
The host range is primarily focused on the Asteraceae family, including various aster species and related herbaceous plants. Infection results in the impairment of photosynthetic capacity, leading to chlorosis and eventually tissue death. In severe cases, the infection can cause systemic weakness, significantly reducing the vigor and reproductive potential of the host plant.
Symptoms typically start as chlorotic, pale lesions on the upper surface of the leaves. As the pathogen matures, these lesions become necrotic and brownish. Under high humidity, a dense, whitish or grayish fungal growth appears on the underside of the infected leaves. This layer consists of sporangiophores and sporangia, which serve as the primary source for the further spread of the disease.
The development of Basidiophora blight is strongly correlated with environmental conditions. High humidity, rain splash, and cool-to-moderate temperatures provide the optimal environment for the dispersal of zoospores. The pathogen can survive unfavorable conditions in the soil as dormant oospores, which allow it to re-emerge in subsequent growing seasons if sanitation measures are not implemented.
Integrated pest management is essential for the control of this pathogen. Key prevention strategies include regular field scouting to detect early symptoms and the removal of infected debris to reduce inoculum load. Fungicide applications, specifically those targeting oomycetes, are highly effective when applied during the early stages of disease progression, combined with practices that improve air circulation and reduce leaf wetness.
