Basidiophora downy mildew is a specific fungal-like plant disease caused by the oomycete pathogen Basidiophora entospora. As an obligate parasite, this organism primarily targets plants within the Asteraceae family. It is recognized as a significant threat to ornamental nurseries and commercial aster production, causing substantial damage under favorable conditions.

The host range is largely concentrated on the Aster genus. The pathogen invades the leaf tissues, drawing nutrients from the host, which leads to a gradual decline in the plant's physiological health. Because it is highly host-specific, the presence of these particular plants in a field or greenhouse increases the risk of an outbreak.

The primary clinical signs are localized lesions on the leaves, which often appear as yellowish or brownish angular spots. Under high humidity, a dense, whitish fungal mat develops on the underside of these lesions, containing numerous spores ready for dispersal. As the disease progresses, the leaf tissue becomes necrotic, leading to early defoliation and severe stunting of the plant.

Environmental conditions are the main drivers of disease spread. The pathogen thrives in cool, damp environments with prolonged leaf wetness. Rain splashes and irrigation water act as the primary vectors, carrying spores from infected to healthy leaves. Once established, the fungus can persist in plant debris and soil, making sanitation a high priority in management strategies.

Controlling this disease requires an integrated approach. Farmers and gardeners should emphasize cultural practices such as improving air circulation, utilizing drip irrigation to keep foliage dry, and removing crop debris immediately after harvest. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate systemic fungicides, particularly those targeting oomycete pathogens, applied at the first sign of infection.
