Description

Basidioradulum is a genus of fungi within the order Hymenochaetales, known primarily as wood-decay pathogens. The most common species, Basidioradulum radula, is a causative agent of white rot in various hardwood species. As a wood-rotting fungus, it systematically breaks down the structural components of wood, eventually causing the tree to lose its structural integrity and vitality.

The fungus typically attacks deciduous trees, including popular orchard species such as apple, pear, and plum. Infection occurs when basidiospores land on exposed wood surfaces, such as pruning wounds, broken branches, or frost-damaged bark. Once established, the mycelium penetrates deep into the sapwood and heartwood, utilizing enzymes to decompose complex wood polymers, leading to progressive decay.

Key symptoms include the emergence of fungal fruiting bodies directly on the bark. These fruiting bodies are often resupinate (crust-like), with a distinctive toothed or bumpy surface and a cream-to-yellowish appearance. Upon closer inspection, the affected wood appears bleached, soft, and friable, showing clear signs of white rot. In advanced stages, the tree may show canopy thinning and branch dieback as the vascular system is compromised.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the spread of Basidioradulum. The fungus thrives in moist, shaded environments where air circulation is poor, allowing for prolonged spore germination and mycelial expansion. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and splashing water, making rainy seasons particularly favorable for new infections within an orchard or forest area.

Effective management and prevention strategies include the following:

  • pruning diseased branches promptly to remove the source of infection;
  • applying protective dressings to all cuts and mechanical injuries to seal the wood;
  • maintaining tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and water management;
  • ensuring good ventilation in the orchard to reduce local humidity levels;
  • proper disposal of infected wood to prevent further spore dispersal.
