The fungus typically infects various fruit trees, including apple, pear, and cherry, as well as several hardwood species found in forests. It gains entry into the tree through wounds in the bark, frost cracks, pruning cuts, or areas damaged by pests, exploiting exposed woody surfaces to establish its mycelial network.
The primary clinical signs of infestation involve the appearance of characteristic fruiting bodies on the surface of the trunk or branches.
