It is critical to distinguish that Beauveria (most notably Beauveria bassiana) is not a plant disease, but rather an entomopathogenic fungus. In agriculture, it serves as a highly effective biological control agent that specifically targets insects, helping growers reduce reliance on synthetic pesticides.

The mode of action begins when fungal spores adhere to the cuticle of an insect host. Under favorable conditions, the spores germinate, and the hyphae penetrate the insect's exoskeleton using enzymatic action. Once inside, the fungus consumes the host's internal tissues, leading to the rapid death of the pest.

Beauveria is known for its broad-spectrum activity against various agricultural pests, including whiteflies, aphids, thrips, weevils, and grasshoppers. It is utilized across a range of environments, from large-scale field crops like wheat and corn to specialized greenhouse vegetable and flower production.

Successful application requires specific environmental conditions. High relative humidity and moderate temperatures are essential for the germination and spread of fungal spores. Sunlight, particularly UV radiation, can be detrimental to the viability of the spores, which dictates the timing of field applications.

A classic visual symptom of Beauveria infection is the appearance of a white, cottony fungal growth covering the insect cadaver. This layer is actually the conidia (spores) produced by the fungus, which serves as a secondary source of infection, allowing the fungus to cycle through and suppress future generations of the pest.
