The fungus Berkeleyomyces basicola, formerly identified as Thielaviopsis basicola, is the primary pathogen responsible for black root rot. This soil-borne fungus targets the root system of a wide variety of plants, causing decay and preventing the efficient uptake of water and minerals from the soil.
This pathogen has a broad host range, affecting essential crops such as tomatoes, peppers, beans, soybeans, peas, and various ornamental species. Because the fungus can persist in the soil for several years through chlamydospores, it represents a long-term challenge for growers in both field and greenhouse environments.
Symptoms initially appear as small dark lesions on the roots, which eventually coalesce, covering the entire root system in a characteristic black, necrotic rot. Above-ground symptoms include stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting, which often leads to the death of the plant during periods of high physiological demand.
Development and spread of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental factors. Cool soil temperatures combined with excessive moisture create an ideal setting for infection. Furthermore, soil acidity plays a significant role; the fungus thrives in acidic soils, making the management of pH levels a crucial component of disease suppression.
