Berkeleyomyces basicola, formerly classified as Thielaviopsis basicola, is a persistent soil-borne fungal pathogen responsible for the disease commonly known as black root rot. This pathogen specifically targets the root systems of a vast array of host plants, severely compromising their ability to uptake water and nutrients from the soil.

The host range of B. basicola is exceptionally broad, encompassing over 170 different plant species. It is particularly notorious for attacking tobacco, beans, soybeans, cotton, and various ornamental plants. Because it can survive in the soil for years as dormant chlamydospores, it remains a persistent challenge for both open-field agriculture and greenhouse production.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as distinct dark brown or black lesions on the root surface, which is where the pathogen produces its characteristic spores. Above-ground symptoms include stunting, chlorosis of the lower leaves, and gradual wilting. As the root system progressively rots, the plant loses its vitality and may eventually succumb to severe nutrient deficiency or secondary pathogens.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the disease. Berkeleyomyces basicola thrives in cool to moderate soil temperatures and typically prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil pH levels. High soil moisture levels significantly enhance the spread of the pathogen, allowing zoospores to swim through the water film and reach healthy root tissue.

Managing black root rot requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Strategies include practicing long-term crop rotation to reduce inoculum density in the soil and ensuring proper drainage to prevent waterlogging. Furthermore, adjusting soil pH levels toward the acidic side can often inhibit the fungus. In professional greenhouse settings, steam sterilization of growing media and strict sanitation of equipment are essential to prevent the introduction of the pathogen.
